Going from Gas to an Electric Vehicle

Electric cars are not a new concept. In fact, some electric cars date back as far as the mid-1800s. But because the batteries were weak and often non-rechargeable, you can understand why the gasoline engine was necessary and in turn dominated the electric vehicle. Today, with breakthroughs in battery technology, electric vehicles have become quite feasible.

Brampton Hydro One makes another energy efficient choice to be green and save. Once becoming the proud owners of a Chevy Volt (EREV) extended range electric vehicle-with backup fuel tank, it was necessary for Brampton Hydro One to find the most effective way to charge it. In doing so Hydro One once again sought out the expertise and knowledge of Dial One Wolfedale Electric. Staying abreast of all that’s new with technology and renewable energy Wolfedale is well known for their reputation as a certified GE EVC installer. After completing a comparative analysis between the Volts’ level 1 charger (120V) and the level 2 charger (220V), Wolfedale Electric quickly determined the level 2 charger to be the most effective and best suited to meet the needs of Hydro One.

Once resolved as to the appropriate charging system, Wolfedale Electric quickly set to work to install the 220V (EVC) electrical vehicle charger for Brampton Hydro One.
I’m no mathematician, but I concluded the following ... The typical business owner pays approximately $0.10/kWh for electricity (mid-peak hours). With a 16-kWh battery, the average electrical vehicle will cost about $1.60 per charge (60-80km). Gas prices lately have been about $1.30 per litre, (16 km for the average car). Add the typical installation of an EVC and you are looking at driving electric costing approx., from one half to one third the price of gasoline.
